California Contractor License Bonds: Costs, Requirements & Quote Help

Know the requirement. Get help with the next step.

Applying for a California contractor license, renewing your license or reviewing your bond? Hightree Insurance Solutions can help you explore contractor bond options and understand what information to prepare.

The required bond amount and the price you pay are not the same thing. Start with the right requirement, then request a quote for your business.

What is the California contractor license bond requirement?

CSLB requires a contractor's bond before issuing, reactivating or renewing an active license. The required amount is $25,000. The bond must be issued by a California-licensed surety, and the business name and license number must match CSLB's records.

This bond supports qualifying claims connected to license law violations and unpaid wages. It is not a general liability insurance policy or a promise that every loss will be paid.

Certain licenses need additional bonds. A bond of qualifying individual may apply, and an active LLC contractor license has a separate $100,000 employee/worker bond requirement. Ask about your entity and qualifier rather than assuming one bond meets every requirement.

Review CSLB's bond requirements and LLC requirements.

Does the bond cost $25,000?

The $25,000 figure is the required bond amount, not an advertised premium. A surety bond quote tells you the premium and terms offered for your application.

CSLB does not set bond premiums. Sureties evaluate applicants, and credit information may affect pricing. Hightree can help you request an individual quote rather than rely on a generic price online.

When comparing options, ask what period the quoted price covers, whether fees apply, what renewal requires and what obligations you accept. Do not assume a low headline price includes the same terms as another offer.

What should I have ready for a quote?

Start with:

  • Your exact legal business name and entity type.
  • Your CSLB license number, or application details if you are applying.
  • The bond requirement or notice you need help with.
  • Your current bond information, if this is a renewal or replacement.
  • The date you need the bond in place.

Hightree will explain any additional information needed for the quote process. Do not send Social Security numbers or payment details through a general contact message.

Frequently asked questions

Does my general liability policy replace the bond?

No. A license bond and general liability insurance serve different purposes. Having one does not establish that you have the other. Read our companion guide, California Contractor Bond vs. General Liability Insurance.

Can a new business request help?

Yes. Tell Hightree where you are in the licensing process so the quote request can be reviewed appropriately. A request is not a guarantee of approval or issuance.

Is requesting a quote enough to satisfy CSLB?

No. A quote is not a filed bond. Confirm the issued bond, effective date and CSLB record before relying on it for licensing.
